GOLDEN SAILS DARK THIS WEEK!
Field Trip to Culver City for Leroy Thomas!
DO NOT GO TO THE GOLDEN SAILS THIS WEEK, JULY 24!
BACK AT GOLDEN SAILS JULY 31.
It's time for the annual Zydeco Field Trip to Culver City for their Zydeco concert evening. This year the date is July 24, and Leroy Thomas and the Zydeco Roadrunners will be performing.
This is a time-honored tradition. Arrive early, bring a picnic dinner or just eat at one of the great small establishments that line Culver Blvd. Bring your folding chair, some water, and be prepared to have a great time!
PLAN ON ARRIVING EARLY. The folks in Culver City get there very early to put out their chairs. Parking is conveniently located under the City Hall. The concert is free, but there is a small charge for the underground parking. (There is also street parking and some other lots in the area, but the City Hall parking is most convenient.)
NOTE: For those who wish to carpool, meet at the parking lot in front of the PCH Club. We'll be leaving at 4:30 PM SHARP! Please contact me in advance if you want to carpool, so I know who's coming with us. If there are only a few people, I'd prefer to meet at my house, so email or give me a call ASAP.

There are 34 people signed up, so it's going to be a great time onstage. We will be dancing on the largest stage at the Fair, the Plaza Arts Stage.
If you weren't able to come dance with us, come on out and cheer us on, tell your friends, and help spread the gospel of Zydeco!

T-Lou at Gardena City Hall Sat July 26 7-9 PM!
What a great weekend! Bring your friends and family, bring your neighbors too! T-Lou is playing Saturday night at the Gardena City Hall. Check it out! Lots of convenient parking, a beautiful grassy setting, cool evening breezes and one of Los Angeles' top Zydeco bands all in one place.
This was a very nice event last year. There's plenty of room to dance on the wide sidewalk in front of the band, bring a picnic dinner and enjoy the evening.
I've had a request to see if someone would be willing to gather the names and contact information of "new" people at this event, as there's a chance I won't make it due to exhaustion from the OC Fair earlier in the day. If you'd be willing to help with this, please contact me pronto, so I can get you the PDF file of the form. In the meantime, here's the scoop:

Greg B's Camping Trip August 1-3, 2008
Greg Benusa's doing another camping trip again this year and he's back to Mt. Laguna! Thank you Greg! I try to go on this trip every year and already sent him my rsvp. It's the same weekend as the Long Beach Crawfish festival, but I'd rather be camping that weekend. Here's the info from the Bons Temps website:
"We have the Buckwheat site reserved which is a little bigger and next to the site we had stayed at in the past. We will need at least 10 folks committed by July 1st for us to do the trip. $20 total per person for both Friday and Saturday should work fine to cover the costs of the site. I will need to know by July 1st if your committed to going so we can plan accordingly. Tent camping, Showers available in camp ground. Will do a hike on Saturday for those who want to go. Camp fires, lots of relaxing, eating, talking, joking, etc....
Greg always does an outstanding job of making sure there are lots of interesting and fun activities to do on his camping weekends. It's a great campground high in the mountains near Julian. At night you can fall asleep looking up at the Milky Way, while listening to breezes as they rustle the branches of the pines overhead.
There were a couple of years that Greg actually brought a digital projector and we watched movies, one year we danced at the local restaurant, there are always folks who bring instruments and we sing old songs, eat s'mores, and just have a great time!
Zydeco at the Los Angeles Music Center Friday, August 8, 2008!
Mark your calendars! Zydeco returns to the Los Angeles Music Center's Dance Downtown FREE dance concert series. T-Lou and His Super Hot Zydeco Band will be the featured band again this year. As always, there is a basic zydeco dance lesson included, and it's all FREE! I'll be the dance instructor that evening. This is the first time the zydeco slot has been prior to Labor Day, and we should have a great turnout, so come have a great time with us.
By the way, if you want to show your support for this event and you're going to be near the Music Center, I will be teaching a "Teaser" lesson this Friday night, July 25 during the break at their Salsa dance that evening.
Come on out to the Los Angeles Music Center's FREE Dance Downtown Zydeco dance evening on Friday night, August 8! Help grow attendance in our Zydeco dance community. Here's the link to the website:

Pine Leaf Boys at Caltech! Oct 18 Mark your calendars!
If you love the Pine Leaf Boys, here's one of the few opportunities you'll have to see them here in California. It's been years since I've been to Beckman Auditorium and I'm looking forward to seeing PLB there. Thank you Phil Auzenne for telling me about this event!
From the Caltech website here is a description of the performers:
PLB: "The Pine Leaf Boys bring youthful exuberance to their inimitable brand of traditional Cajun and Creole music. They bring a variety and energy to standards, as well as songs by past masters, all delivered with gusto. Skillful multi-instrumentalists, they often switch instruments during their effervescent show."
Rani Arbo: "A sparkling, high energy show marked by breathtaking musicianship." Singer Rani Arbo and her group serve up a foot-stomping musical celebration of American roots fused with splashes of pop and jazz. Rich four-part harmonies, drum, fiddle, guitar, and bass create a jubilant mix of traditional, original, and contemporary sounds.
In short, here are the details:

Past Event: Bill Pickett Rodeo
I apologize to you guys. I didn't get the listing for this past weekend's Bill Pickett Rodeo into the Gazette in time for you to attend. Someone reminded me last Thursday night that the rodeo was in town this past weekend. Due to server limitations, I wasn't able to send it out to you guys in time. However, I will do my best to remember it for next year, as I highly recommend this event.
Housed in the impressively refurbished "The Grand" equestrian center in Industry Hills, this was a memorable event. Cowboys and Cowgirls of all ages participated. The youngest was a tiny six-year-old barrell racer at his first rodeo. Cowboys were bucked off broncs, thrown from spinning bulls as they charged around the arena, and dazzled the audience as they passed the baton in the relay races. Their horses ran full out, mane and tails flying, nostrils distended, with hooves sending clods of earth flying from the arena floor.
Cowgirls leaned precariously from their galloping mounts to snatch ribbons from steers in the incongruously named Steer Decorating event, steers were roped, calves thrown to the ground and legs tied in fractions of seconds, Stevie Wonder wowed the crowd as he said hello to folks during intermission, and a great time was had by all.
If you've never been to this event, plan on going next year when the Bill Pickett Rodeo is back in town.
MINDY' SONEN'S FESTIVAL REPORT (ALAMEDA AND PORTLAND, OR)
"If you don't treat your dog right, I'll always have a place where he can bury his bone" -Rosie Ledet
As a master of the double entrendre, with a sultry voice, a real short mini-skirt, and a tight backup band, is it any wonder Rosie Ledet is one heck of a crowd pleaser? She accomplished 3 things I have never seen a zydeco performer do, and it reminded me of several of the better rock and roll concerts I have attended in my lifetime. She managed to:
1) gather the biggest stage-pressing crowd of non-dancers I have ever seen
2) gather the biggest c.d. buying crowd I have ever seen at a zydeco event
3) Get a 100% standing ovation (several) from the audience which numbered in the several hundreds, both dancers and non-dancers alike.
The above was witnessed by me at the Portland Waterfront Blues Festival on July 5th. The festival actually is 4 days long, but only one day is dedicated to zydeco. There are two other stages with blues performers all day, but the third stage is strictly zydeco for one day. Why this festival isn't on more dancers radars is beyond me. With a gorgeous setting right on the Willamette River, 3 stages of blues and a dance floor just for the zydeco day, it is a wonderful event that lovers of the blues should flock to.
The Cascade Zydeco Club in Portland does an great job of organizing this event. Every year they hire 4 zydeco bands, and each of the 4 bands plays twice throughout the day and evening. The event goes until 10:30pm. That way, if you miss a band during the day, you can catch their evening show. What a wonderful idea!
The other bands that day were Chris Ardoin, Dikki Du and Cedryl Ballou. Those other three were good, but after Rosie's performance, they weren't memorable. Many dancers just stopped to stare. Talk about stage presence-wow. I saw her about 5 years ago at the Memphis Zydeco Festival, and she was smokin' hot this time in comparison.
Her backup band, for some unknown reason was 'Lil Malcom and the House Rockers. (They mumbled something about her regular backup band being unavailable this summer). Note to Rosie-Keep these guys around-they knocked the doors off the place. O.k.-there are no doors at an outdoor festival, but you get the point.
Before heading to Portland, I stopped for a quick 4th of July in Alameda. I was very lucky to participate in Louisiana Sue's parade on the zydeco pirate's float through the streets of Alameda. Leave it to L.S. to do an awesome job of organizing this event. As always every detail was perfect and there was lagniappe everywhere, (bloody mary's and screwdrivers to greet us upon arrival, etc.)
Sue even had extra pirate costumes on hand for anyone who didn?t have one. She even installed a dance floor on the float. It was a very long parade, a full two hours. If you ever feel a need to test your balance and stamina, this is the event to attend! Try dancing for two hours on a moving vehicle and YOU try to keep your balance!
Just to make us feel even more humble-and dork-like, she had Willie Bushnell there to dance with us. With his 120-pound weight loss, Willie was unrecognizable. Kudos to you Willie. And a special kudos to Sue for her hard work. It certainly paid off as our float won first place!!!! She had another dance and BBQ planned for later that afternoon but we skipped it to watch fireworks from a boat in San Francisco Bay.
If you've never seen San Francisco Fog colored by fireworks, its an experience! I knew I'd be dancing to Chris Ardoin the very next day in Portland, so it was a good choice we made. The new venue Sue has for dancing is a brand-new beautiful dance studio with 3 dance floors. It is a great location at the entrance to Alameda Island. I wish her much success in the new venue. See you at Ardenwood!"
Thanks, Mindy! Great report!
SHERRI GRAMZA'S INCREDIBLE LEMON DESSERT!
(From the 4th of July Zydeco BBQ)
This dessert was in high demand at my Zydeco 4th of July BBQ here in Long Beach, and went in a flash once folks discovered it. Several people asked for the recipe. (OK, one of 'em was me.) I asked Sherri for the recipe and she graciously said it was OK to share it with you. It's amazing. Here goes:
Lemon Lush
1 Cup flour
1 Cup chopped pecans
1 stick margarine, softened
1 package (8 oz.) cream cheese, softened
1 Cup powdered sugar
1 carton (8 oz.) non-dairy whipped topping, divided (you can use more if you want)
1 teaspoon vanilla
3 packages (3.4 oz. size) Jello lemon instant pudding
2 Cups milk
Mix flour, pecans, and margarine together and press into a 13x9x2 glass or aluminum baking pan. Bake 15-20 minutes at 350 degrees. Cool. Mix together cream cheese, sugar, 1 Cup whipped topping and vanilla and spread gently on top of baked layer. With electric mixer or by hand, beat together pudding mixes and milk for 2 minutes and spread on top of crem cheese layer. Top with remaining whipped topping (use extra if you want). Sprinkle lightly with nutmeg and, if you like, a few chopped or ground pecans. Keep refrigerated. Makes 12-15 servings.
This can also be made using 2 packages of chocolate pudding and one package of vanilla instant pudding, instead of the lemon pudding, but the lemon seems more refreshing somehow.
FLOYD'S RECORDS SPOTLIGHT CD OF THE WEEK
Dunice Theriot - The Essential Collection. $13.99
This is classic Cajun and country from a Louisiana Legend of long ago.
I've been a subscriber to Floyd's weekly spotlight for a long time now. They've always got something good every week. I've got to admit, I'm a zydeco snob and Cajun music doesn't do for me what Zydeco does, but this CD is something to check out.
There are some wonderful tunes that are old-time country and some that are pure, old time Cajun. All are satisfying to the ear and gratifying to the heart.

TIRE WARNING - CRITICAL INFORMATION MAY SAVE YOUR LIFE
When I get these postings, my first thought is "Oh boy, another hoax. Better check it out at Snopes." However, when I looked at the footage, I knew that wasn't necessary. I hope you take the time to watch the clip below.
Someone sent me this link this week to a news story that could save your life. Did you know that some of the tires that are being sold as "new" could be as much as 12 years old? These tires become brittle and go to shreds at highway speeds, causing the vehicle to veer out of control. Take the time to watch this clip, it could save your life or the life of someone you love.
I hope this helps someone. Pass it along.

The popular Rhythm & Roots Festival returns for its 11th year with another sizzling lineup of roots music. The Grammy nominated, multi-faceted PINE LEAF BOYS play host band this year with stellar blues artist ROBERT CRAY, the eclectic sounds of the DAVID BROMBERG QUARTET – a band that ranges from bluegrass to Texas Swing to blues – and the kick butt jumpin' piano boogie of MARCIA BALL who will arrive sporting her new CD, Peace, Love and BBQ, which has been parked on the Top 40 Americ ana Chart for several weeks now. She will be joined on stage for her set by friends Joel Guzman, Johnny Nicholas, Steve Riley & others as the Louisiana Texas Revue.
After wowing the crowd last year, former Roomful of Blues member and Rhode Island native, JOHNNY NICHOLAS is back doing his own set with his band, the TEXAS ALL STARS. Rhythm & Roots also welcomes back contemporary blues artist and 3-time Grammy winner, KEB MO, who graced the festival stage in 2005, garnering many new fans with his appearance that year. And recently added to the Friday
night lineup is none other than Rhode Island's own, PAUL GEREMIA, a master of Texas fingerpicking and slide style guitar.
The Louisiana Cajun and Zydeco contingent includes the one-two punch of NATHAN & THE ZYDECO CHA CHAS, the Cajun and zydeco swamp pop of STEVE RILEY & THE MAMOU PLAYBOYS, and the all-star supergroup comprised of ED POULLARD, COREY LEDET, & PRESTON FRANK & Friends. STEVE RILEY and company are celebrating 20 years as a band with their brand new 2-disc retrospective set, the Best of Steve Riley & the Mamou Playboys. Zydeco/roots jam band, DONNA THE BUFFALO returns by popular demand. There's also the rockin' roots and mayhem of DAN HICKS & THE HOT LICKS, THE WAYBACKS, and THE GOURDS on this year's bill plus many more.
Besides being named one of the Top 100 Events in North America by the American Bus Association in 2007, the Rhythm & Roots Festival was given the Starlight Award by the South County Tourism Council in recognition of its contribution to the tourism of southern Rhode Island.
In addition to being renowned for its impressive lineup of artists, Rhythm & Roots is also known for its wide array of gourmet food and drink in a wonderfully festive setting, which includes the HOT TAMALE BRASS BAND keeping patrons entertained in the eating area as well as leading the kids' mardi gras parades on Saturday and Sunday.
Four music stages are featured with large dance floors at both the Main Stage and Dance Pavilion. Dance lessons in the afternoon are followed by packed evening dances to live Louisiana dance bands. The Family Stage provides storytelling at its best along with nationally known children's performers, mardi gras mask making workshops, and evening movies plus the ever increasing Kids Cajun Academy instrument learning program. The Workshop Stage has intimate music demonstrations and interaction with artists.
A new feature at this year's Workshop Stage is COOKING WITH LINDZAY. Patrons will learn to cook authentic "Loooziane style" cuisine with none other than Lindzay Young from the Red Stick Ramblers< /b>. Lindzay has been cooking up a storm since he was a kid and is excited about passing on some of his culinary secrets to fellow food enthusiasts.
Critics have been quoted as saying that, "Rhythm & Roots is an incredible experience, a perfectly organized, flawlessly run major destination event that music fans from all over the country will be drawn to…" So, if you're looking to "let the good times roll," the Rhythm & Roots Festival in Charlestown, RI is the place on Labor Day weekend.
